Lighting Technique and Application
I called it theory because these rules may or may not be realistic for your shoot. Many times the environment or schedule does not facilitate a proper lighting kit and each year modern cameras get better at filming in low light.
Every filmmaker is judged by his ability to think on his feet and adjust the shot for each new location.
Lighting can make a profound difference in the like-ability of your client.
Good lighting is mandatory when filming injury and disability.
A simple three point lighting principle will make your subject seem natural and three dementional.
First, the “Source” light should be the principal light for your subject. The source light is typically aimed so that the subject is looking in the general direction of the light during the interview. This light should illuminate the majority of your subject’s face.
The “Edge” or “Hair” light should be above the subject to give the image three de-mention. Without this light, video can look “flat” and amateurish.
The third is the “fill” light which is typically placed on the opposite side of the source light to fill the shadows of your subject’s face. This light is usually the least bright of the three and some evening news programs will shoot without this light to make the interview more dramatic. This light is also brightest when you want to reduce age lines. The fill light is sometimes called a “Beauty” light
